5 Money Making Ways to Supplement Your Income

You’ve decided to go for it. That’s fabulous and deserving of so many other accolades that it’s kind of a bummer to remind you of an essential thing you’re lacking: cash. A career change does not necessarily lead to overnight riches. It’s an investment, a lonely road paved with hard work and penny-pinching. But that doesn’t mean you have to be broke along the way.

You can’t afford to be broke. As if you need a reminder, you’ve got:

Debt to pay off
Savings to build
Goals to achieve

What you’ve got is an income that needs supplementing.

Here are 5 ways to make money while you’re segueing to your next big thing.

1. Moonlight

This could mean waiting tables in the evening or slinging coffee beans in the morning. A second job can also be an opportunity to bolster job experience, pay off debt and build savings no matter where you are in your career.

2. ‘Consult’

The word ‘consultant’ is a bit of a buzzword, but it sure looks pretty on a resume. During a career change in particular, providing consulting services is a great way to supplement your income and establish yourself as an expert in your field.

3. Hobby-horse for cash

There is nothing wrong with cashing in on your passions, even if that passion is kittens. There’s a lot of money in kittens – photographing them, blogging about them, creating memes about them, binding books about them. Or maybe shoes are your thing…turn that dangerous shopping habit into a money-maker by becoming a personal or mystery shopper.

4. Make money virtually

You could kitty blog your way into extra income (see #3), or earn $25, $50 or $250 a post by blogging about another area of expertise (see #2). Option #4 is to make money online by selling your wares in an online shop or eBay store.

5. Downsize…and monetize while you’re at it

Going minimal is all the rage right now, and with good reason. We Americans have too much stuff. You could continue stockpiling and hoarding that stuff until a reality television crew knocks on your door. Or host your own Great American Purge, via:

A yard or ‘stoop’ sale
‘Virtual sale’ on Craigslist

Seasonal sale, a.k.a. selling clothes you no longer wear to trendy clothing exchanges and consignment shops.

With supplemental income in hand, you’re free to pursue your upgraded career goals with abandon. Just be sure to keep your eyes on the prize, and hands out of your pockets.
